Ashbourne is "the Gateway to Dovedale" which begins just 2 miles north of the town along the A51 7 towards Buxton. Take the left turn signposted Dovedale. Park in the large car park and walk beside the River Dove or, for the fitter walkers, climb Thorpe Cloud and enjoy the breathtaking views along the river valley.
Special events in Ashbourne include:
Shrovetide Football, played through the town and one of just a few places in the country where "town football" survives, Ashbourne is proud of its tradition and support for the "Uppards" and "Downards" is fierce.
Highland Gathering, Originating from Derbyshire's long standing connection with Bonnie Prince Charlie, it takes place in July and is a great attraction for sporting, drinking and shopping activities.
Carsington Water. Located just two miles from the park this superb beauty spot offers a visitor centre, yacht club, fishing, windsurfing and sailing. Established in 1993, the reservoir has a 12 kilometre cycle route around its perimeter as well as very pleasant walking and picnic areas. There is a large children's play area and lots of lovely shops. With special events throughout the year it offers a great day out for all the family.
Matlock and Matlock Bath offer
Gulliver's Kingdom and the Heights of
Abraham. Take a ride on the cable car and
visit the caves.
Bakewell is well worth a visit. Don't forget to buy a Bakewell Pudding. Market day is Monday.
Leek and Derby offer the more serious shopper a wide range of shops.
Country Houses and National Trust properties abound including Haddon, Kedleston and Sudbury Halls. Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire,
with it's magnificent grounds, farm park and garden centre, is well worth a day out.
Buxton offers the Opera House and all the historical attractions of the Peak District's favourite spa town.
Well Dressings. Held throughout Derbyshire's villages from May until the end of September. The old custom of Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire. Once known as "well flowering" it is the art of decorating wells or
springs with pictures made from natural growing things.
